Doggy Chronicles: Four Months

Some days, Mississippi, when you are being the sweetest dog the world has ever known, I can’t believe we’ve only had you four months now. I can’t believe anyone would give you up. You are amazing. You have mellowed so much in these few short months. Most of the time now, we can safely keep bedroom doors open, we even leave the gate to the basement open occasionally. You don’t get into as much trouble. You are eating less of my garden. You can sit for long periods of time without getting ansty.

Last weekend, when you were sitting patiently at the dog grooming place for your turn to get your nails clipped, a small boy rushed right up to you and stuck his hand in your face. You didn’t even flinch. You let him pet you and you didn’t try to jump on him. You even gave his sister and him some very cute high fives. What a cutie you are. We are so proud of you.

We’ve taken you to the Lucky Lab brew pub twice and both times you did so well, only getting a little impatient after we’d finished 2/3 of our beer. You greeted the neighboring table without jumping, and charmed them with your soft fur and cute face.

You have been very patient with all this crazy heat and have done well at day care. You let us eat dinner with hardly a complaint and you usually curl up under the table and wait patiently for it to be your time to eat. You let us sleep in a little and you wake us with requests for butt scratches instead of throwing the tantrums you used to throw at 5:30 in the morning when you were still new to us.

You are our doggy and we love you so much. It feels so great to be making a little more progress on getting you out into the world. Sometimes you are just so cute I want to squeeze you til you pop. Now please…

We don’t want a guard dog. I know that you want a job around the house. I know that my job as a web developer is no fun for you. I know that you feel like I’m ignoring you when I’m on conference calls. You must stop this crazy barking. There is no one at the door. There are no boogie men in the back yard. Everything is fine. Chill out. Chill! I understand you want to feel needed around here. We’re working on it, I swear. Please just stop with the crazy barking.

Please stop destroying out stuff when you feel like you aren’t getting enough attention. I have to have conference calls. There’s nothing I can do about it. Please don’t eat daddy’s slippers. It’s going to be cold here in the winter and he’s going to need them. Please just stick to chewing your sticks. We’ll make sure you have all the sticks you want, just please spare our belongings.

Please stop getting in tiffs at doggy daycare. I am so scared something bad is going to happen. You’ve got to learn to walk away. Please learn quickly before anything bad happens. Day care has been so good for you. When you have to stay home with me all day, you are miserable. Please be a good girl.

OK sweetie, happy four months together. I hope you love us as much as we love you. Every week we get better and better. You are so amazing. Just keep working on the amazing bits and we’ll try to keep you active enough to avoid the destructive bits.
