about bad paintings

I probably shouldn’t talk badly about a painting I hope to sell, but still, it’s my journal and I need to write about these things. This is an painting I did today when I had no plan.

Sometimes I have to paint a bad painting just to try and figure out what makes it bad. Sometimes I know they are going to be bad from the first splash of paint. Sometimes I consider it a challenge to try and turn a bad painting into a good painting. Honestly, most paintings, for atleast a little while are bad paintings, getting over that hump is what makes them great paintings.

This painting, I think, is pretty bad. It’s ok… It’s too busy and the colors are too similar in saturation. But at the same time, I kinda like it and think it deserves it’s day in the the sun. Who knows. maybe someone will love it. I’ll let it live atleast until open studios and see what happens. Tom gave me a very high complement last night. As we were discussing what my painting’s faults were, he said “Even your bad paintings are getting better.” I think it’s a tremendous complement.
