Investing in my future health

Women who had gestational diabetes face ugly statistics regarding Type II diabetes. Something like 50% will develop Type II diabetes within 5-10 years. I didn’t even know about gestational diabetes before getting pregnant, but I did know I was at a higher risk for developing Type II diabetes. So during my pregnancy I figured out what I had to do, and I embraced it whole heartedly. I monitored my blood sugar carefully and saw which foods spiked my glucose levels and which didn’t. I learned a new way to eat and I learned that I actually kinda liked it. I felt better, I felt like I was eating how my body wanted to eat.

Now that I’m 10 months postpartum and I’ve had the chance to enjoy a large quantity of pastries, I’m ready to embrace a new lifestyle, one that’ll keep me clear of Type II diabetes, help me loose some weight, and keep my gut healthier. I’m limited carbs to no more than 2-3 servings a day and I’m limiting my treats to five a month. My goal is to eat lots of veggies, nuts, and beans. Plenty of fruit and animal protein too. Much less bread, and less grains in general. It’s easy to rely on getting most of my calories from grains but it’s no the best way for me to eat. So I have to set rules for myself or I’ll never change my habits.

So here we go, it’s the end of the first week of my new me. I’m still in a bit of carb withdrawls but I’m doing good. Wish me luck.
