It will be okay. I know it's just an anecdote, but I have a friend who couldn't keep food down for almost her whole pregnancy ("hyperemesis"), lost weight, and her healthy daughter is five or six now.

Maybe you can tell the job that if they still need you after next Friday, maybe part-time, but not full-time? If they just can't seem to get it together?

If you like quinoa and it works okay glycemically, I found out recently that red quinoa tastes nicer than white to me, especially if cooked in broth. And hey, if you like cheese, you've got a pretty good license to snack on it lots, right?

Wishing you and child the best of health and less pains.

Sadly, the dietitian's recommendations aren't working out. So I'm going to have to go back to no fruit, no grains. I may be able to have a small amount of grains at night, but I think it's going to have to be in arena of whole grains like wheat berries, bulgar, etc. Breads are just too quick for me to digest right now, even spelt wheat bread. I had been doing those kinds of breads a couple months ago and my midwives recommended I completely cut out all grains, especially breads, yes even the kind that require refrigeration.

It's back to nothing but beans, beans, beans the magical fruit, meat, nuts, and veggies.

Good job, on the diet!
I've been low-carbing for years so let me know if you want any food ideas. Fruit-wise, your best choices are berries, and hey, lots of good ones coming into season in Oregon! After that come melons, then soft fruits, then citrus (excepting culinary use of lemons/limes), and worst are tropical fruits, in general. Of course you have to test, but this is the usual way of it.
Have you ever tried sprouted grain bread? It's lower glycemic, so if you really love bread it might be a reasonable choice. Keep it in the fridge, though, it goes off really fast.

i'm glad you liked the videos. i watch them about every other day. i think believing in one's self is the hardest part of maintaining a practice. i want my practice to be healthy. i'm so worn down by all the "expectations". i just want to be present in the work, the simple act of drawing, and how quickly an afternoon ends when i'm completely enveloped in my love of the thing.

Alanna, I read that whole grain rice has a much lower glycemic level than whole grain flour, which is only slightly better than white flour. I think the source is 'Nutrition Action' the magazine I subscribe to, which is edited by Ph.D.'s in nutrition. The article didn't provide a reason -- I'm guessing that flour is more processed while the rice has to be processed by us. Whole grain rice makes stir-fried veggies (I use water rather than oil) taste great.

Alanna - I'm sorry about the loss of your mom, mostly for the loss that goes back decades but also for her death. It was brave of you to read her letter, and it is brave of you to be going forward having a daughter of your own. I know that becoming a mom will bring things unimaginable to you, and some of what it has brought me is the biggest inspiration and motivation to be the best person I can be and to be the mom I wish I'd had - so I wish those things for you, too. There are times in parenthood when it has been difficult for me to let go of the weight of my own relationship with my mom and the ways I feel certain legacies continuing, and I think those times require the same openness, the same letting go, that you're currently practicing. So good work. XOAmy

Good for you Alanna! I love sweet things and can relate. Cashews are really tasty. I buy those prepackaged almonds from TJ and eat them for lunch together with cut fruits (not good about cooking). Pumpkin seeds (pepitas) are also delish and additionally are a good source of iron, 25% daily need per serving. (I've been reading up a lot on nutrition as my spouse has blood pressure and cholesterol issues.) Congrats on the baby and the beautiful house!

Hi Yvonne! Thanks, I'm not even messing with granola or dried fruit this month. If next month's test doesn't show high glucose levels, we'll see, but I just want to play it safe right now. I don't want to jeopardize my ability to have a home birth over a little sugar. I can live for 4 months without it. Decaf lattes are my friend right now.

Alanna, for sweet things with fiber, I love granola and also the freeze-dried fruits from Trader Joe's (nothing added to the fruit) -- my favorites are mangoes and strawberries (which is only 120 cal for the entire packet!).
